So with moments to spare, the Shutdown in Washington is avoided. John Boehner, held the GOP together, and fought off Harry and Barack and got a deal! We should be happy about it, but certainly not ecstatic.
I am going to try to put the last week in perspective.
The government did not have to be shutdown as an agreement that cuts $38.5 Billion from the ridiculous federal budget was struck. By itself, the fact that CUTTING occurred instead of increase is mildly amazing. The fact that we had to come up with such an agreement eight months after the Democrats SHOULD have passed a budget shows how inept Washington is these days. At least it is moving in the right direction.
Why didn’t Harry and Nancy get this done last year? They didn’t want a ridiculous spending bill to pass as they tried to get their people elected! How did that work out for ya, Nancy? Even after getting whacked in November, the liberals still don’t get it. We all heard Nancy spout about how seniors, if the proposal by the Republicans got passed, wouldn’t EAT anymore, and Harry tell us that we didn’t have a deal because the GOP didn’t want his daughters to get Pap Smears. We pay these people for this rhetoric?
Before the ink is dry, we have Barack, reading from his teleprompter as usual, boasting what a historic set of cuts this is and how hard HE worked to get this done. Simultaneously, Harry is thanking everyone but the janitor for this $78 Billion dollar decrease in the federal budget. $78 billion Harry? Is that D.C. Math? How hard you worked Barack? Are these the same guys that offered $6 billion in cuts just four weeks ago? You can’t make this STUFF up!
How in the world can people like this look themselves in the mirror! Why do we have to see these talking heads spend more time in front of the cameras than at their desks doing their jobs? Has credibility been removed from the dictionary?
Boehner, as previously noted, held his constituents together, and got some concessions that are impressive at least. He got the Senate to agree to vote a on de-funding Obamacare; a small miracle in itself. He also got the Spenders to give back some money; albeit just the change that falls out of the pockets of the budget on a daily basis. While I applaud his efforts, let’s not throw him or anyone else a party in Washington. A step in the right direction, but the babiest of baby steps to be sure!
The Obamacare vote is interesting by itself. Barack and Harry threw Boehner a bone here, but the most interesting thing about the Senate vote to come on Obamacare is that if the Senate votes it down, those that did will be on the record, and will have to face the music come re-election time! It will be interesting to see who stands with the President and who throws him to the sharks. No big worry here from the Liberals point of view. Even if the Senate votes with the house, the President will veto the bill. Should be entertaining at least.
That brings me to another observation of the past week. Our fiscal house is a disaster, and serious things need to be settled. What we witnessed most last week was posturing from both sides; not hard work on difficult decisions. Ten minutes of effort for every hour of sound-bites designed to protect politicians and their silly jobs! Polls are flying as to who would be blamed for the shutdown, and how this would play out in November 2012. Memo to both sides of the aisle: Who gives a Rats Butt? DO YOUR FREAKIN’ JOBS, PLEASE!!!
I am happy that at least we are talking about cutting the budget instead of ‘Winning the Future” (read wasting more money on stupid programs we can’t afford), but we have a government that is incompetent. Their decision making has so little to do with what the country needs and so much to do with keeping their jobs and their power.
Paul Ryan unveiled a plan that could fix many things with government spending and get us in a much better fiscal place. For the reasons I mention above, I don’t think it has a chance of going anywhere (I hope I am wrong). Remember, Barack asked a bi-partisan commission to come up with ideas on how to get us out of this mess, and promptly ignored them all when they didn’t tell him that Windmills and Solar panels were the answer! Can you understand my skepticism?
The title here talks about cheering; and we should cheer. Just not too loudly!

For once, I’d like to hear the news media report how small $38 billion in cuts really is. Obama introduced a budget at the beginning of the year that is running a $1.6 TRILLION deficit for just this year and all we can do is cut $38 billion with this bill?
Methinks I need to get into the Kool Aid business. Sure seems to be a huge demand for the stuff.
To put it in perspective. Next time I get a $160 bill from Pete, I’ll pay 38 cents toward the balance and he and I would agree that I’m making good progress toward paying off the bill. Yeah right, I’d be lucky to walk away from the shop.

I made a mistake with my math in the above example. It should read $3.80 instead of 38 cents. My bad, I’m from Kentucky; what can I say?

The politicians calculators don’t seem to work. The + and – do not seem to function properly. Let’s buy them simple units that only + and -. No funny symbols.
Have them try a new game. Start with the base balance and try to subtract without a negative balance. If they wind up with a positive balance they win and get to keep their jobs and paychecks. Wind up in the negative balance and their paychecks bounce and are out of a job.
Not a new or hard game to learn. MOST of us play it every day.
It’s really time for them to have some real skin in the game.
Certain job loss if they don’t win the game! Just like MOST of us.
Using that same logic, how ’bout straight commission? Pay all three branches based on dollars UNDER budget, with the budget being tax dollars. If they spend less than they take in, they can have a percentage. Then the group wouldn’t be ‘Greedy Rich’ people anymore, and we will see how much they give a damn about America!
Thanks Patrick!
