This phrase, the first you learn in salesman school, is appropriate as we look at the debt ceiling, and the financial state our country finds itself in.
As we listen to the liberals spout how we will default on our debt if we don’t raise the debt limit, and the GOP saying they want this and that to allow the raise, I say SHUT THE (FILL IN THE EXPLETIVE) UP! We spend more than we take in, and we can stop it in ten minutes.
I usually don’t pose specific policies on these pages, but there seems to be nobody in Washington willing to make the correct decisions, and my hand is now forced!
For all you simple minded legislators, I am going to put my plan in very simple terms:
Take the money we collect each month, pay the monthly interest on the debt, pay something toward the principle, divide whatever is left on a pro-rata basis to all the programs this silly government has come up with. If Cowboy Poetry has to do with 15% less next month, so be it! We are not defaulting on our debt, we ARE paying it down, and we don’t have to argue with anyone as to where the cuts should take place. SIMPLE; EFFECTIVE; IMMEDIATE! Everybody takes a hit; so what!
The beauty of this plan is that everyone who isn’t getting the money they are used to will bitch about it! Then the lame legislators will have to either make their pet projects more efficient, or find other wasteful areas of our humongous government to eliminate, so they can waste the remainder as they see fit!
Another benefit of this simple plan is that it is mindless, which fits perfectly with our representatives on both sides of the aisle. If the economy ticks up, all programs could be more fully funded; down and the cuts are deeper. If the politicos want more cash to waste, they can stay out of our way, let the economy flourish, and they get more cash. Mind everyone’s business and screw up the economy as they have in recent years, less money to waste. See how simple this is?
I know it sounds a bit ridiculous to ask our government to operate as we have to, but please tell me any other plan that can keep us from raising the debt ceiling, pay what we have to, and cut everything we need to without an act of congress. When our home budget is in debt as our government is, we cut out everything that we can, keep our heads down, and come out the other side with less debt; shouldn’t Washington try this on for size?
Unfortunately, simple and DC don’t usually run on the same track. Maybe they should!
My two cents, how ’bout yours?
