As the three days of the Holiday weekend drew to a close, it occurred to me that ‘Independence Day’ just ‘aint what it used to be! The nanny-state we live in today, has slowly but surely taken away most of our independence, and if the Washington Brain-trust has it’s way, it will take away the rest!
Silly things like seat-belts, and helmets for our kids and rubber balls for little-leaguers; they all seem innocuous, right? But this is exactly how it starts. When I was a kid, I didn’t have to wear a helmet to ride a bike; I am not sure I could have found a helmet to buy if I wanted one! But if I DID want to wear one, nobody would argue with me; it was my decision. Now you HAVE to wear a helmet if you ride and you are, blah, blah, blah.
At what point in history did we beg our government to stop making and enforcing laws that kept us from hurting each other and start making laws that told us what color underwear to wear on Tuesday? OK this is a reach, but we are talking philosophy here!
Did we fight back the British 235 years ago, so Michele Obama could tell our kids they can’t eat Twinkies? Did our ancestors struggled to reach these shores so the can be taxed to death and have their money given to others because someone in Washington thinks it is a good idea??
I heard either Barack or Biden this weekend bemoan private plane tax breaks saying something like (paraphrasing here) ‘Should we give tax breaks to millionaires so some kid doesn’t get a college scholarship?’. Why is the Federal Government in the scholarship business in the first place? And I could give a rat’s butt if they take away the special treatment the Obama administration gave to folks who wanted to buy these multi-million dollar planes. They may wish to reflect upon a previous administration that almost single-handedly killed the Yacht business in this country with a similar move.
My point is that these folks at the helm believe they know better than all of us, and that we as a people have no rights to the money we earn, unless THEY decide to let us keep some! They argue over the debt limit; how we could default. PLEASE!!! Obama has raised the federal deficit by a third in two years! Roll back those changes and we wouldn’t have much of a problem at all! This doesn’t even OCCUR to them!
The Beatles ‘Taxman’ rolls through my head as I write this. I remember hearing this as a youngster and thinking; ‘The poor British… they still have to deal with the Taxman… that is why we fought for our independence’. Here we are some 40 years later and our friends in Washington wish for nothing more the socialism/Marxism that our fathers fought against in WWII. Where is our independence?
WE MUST TURN THIS SHIP!!!
While it is a sad commentary on what the political elite have done to this country, this is still the greatest nation in the world! Maybe that is why this all gets me so damn MAD?
